The importance of natural home births

A passionate and emotive talk from Caroline Flint. A birth teaches a woman how powerful and amazing she is.  So why are we treating births like a production line. Not as the most natural thing in the world.

yes i love this idea very much. but one problem emerges when you think about the fact that being in the hospital makes it more likely that if anything goes wrong, there is medical staff and good equipment to handle the situation.
i really like the way you speak :) you are very cool.

Intervention is much more likely if you give birth in a stressed state in hospital – in the UK there are 2 midwives present at a home birth – if something should go wrong their constant attention to you will pick it up far earlier than sporadic visits by rushed midwives in hospital. Its a myth that homebirthing is dangerous.
Childbirth is natural – and should take place wherever possible in natural surroundings.
Having had 2 very big boys at home myself – I couldnt recommend it highly enough.
Loved the talk – thank you.

The issue at stake is one of informed choice – not whether one way of birth is right or wrong. Let’s not get into judgement, that’s not what this is about. I made an informed choice to have my first child at home, but in the event 2 midwives weren’t on offer, so I had him in a birthing pool in hospital. It couldn’t have been better …. it was amazing. I had my twins in hospital – not such a great experience, but I didn’t feel confident enough to have twins at home. And the only intervention I had was a much-needed spinal for the second baby, so pretty good going all up. The issue with homebirth is one of educating and informing women so they are equipped to make the right choice, but women should also be informed about hospital birth. I have known several women plan candlelit waterbirths at home, only to be rushed in for emergency C-sections at the last minute. It happens, and if you’re planning a homebirth, you’d better be prepared for all eventualities!
